Category: Main -> Suspension

Question
·  What is the proper way to measure U-bolts?
·  Are U-bolts reusable?
·  Should you re-torque a U-bolt after installation?
·  What options does PSD offer for increasing load capacity of my suspension?

Answer
·  What is the proper way to measure U-bolts?

First, you must know the diameter of the rod, and it must be measured on the threaded end. Then measure the inside width at the end of the radius of the inside bend. Next, measure the inside length from the center of the radius of the inside bend. Now that you have taken the measurement of the rod, you must determine the style of the top, is it a "Round, Square, or a Semi-Round" radius? The best thing to do is bring a sample into one of our experienced parts or service technicians, and they will assist you with what you need.

·  Are U-bolts reusable?

No. When a U-bolt is tightened to its recommended torque level, the bolt stretches as it conforms to it's seating and the threads stretch as they mate with the hi-nuts. Removing the nuts from a stretched U-bolt will cause a cross threading that will not allow the U-bolt to be adequately retightened. Because a properly installed U-bolt is stretched it should never be reused!

·  Should you re-torque a U-bolt after installation?

Yes. After 1000 miles, because they will slightly loosen at first due to normal road vibrations.
